Who is Responsible for Roof Snow Removal? A Guide for Homeowners, Renters, and Landlords

For those of us owning, renting, or leasing a dwelling in Central Minnesota, roof snow removal is top of mind several months out of the year, and for good reason!

Roof snow removal is time consuming, difficult work, and depending on the amount of snow, it can also be costly.  Here’s what we’d like you to keep in mind as you navigate the snow this winter:

As you could’ve probably anticipated, homeowners, you’re on the hook for snow removal.  That being said, if you’re not up for the task, a local roof snow removal service is the next best option.  The most reputable companies will also be sure to keep their eyes peeled for the early signs of ice dams.

If you rent a home from a landlord, or, you’re the landlord, things are, well, a bit more complicated.  Our biggest piece of advice is to have a clear lease agreement both the tenant and the landlord have read, agreed upon, and signed, as there is no specific state law that sets the rules in stone.  In many instances, tenants are responsible for snow removal, but, depending on variables, such as a tenant’s ability to physically remove snow, each renting situation can be different.  Be sure to do your own research, and don’t forget to have thoroughly documented agreements.
